How do I get to an Essay?

The Essays can be accessed in the following ways:

  • Quick search
  • Search All
  • Timeline (click related materials on a timeline entry)
  • View Contents: link from Schomburg Essays and Required Reading
  • Glossary items

Essays can be viewed in two ways: onscreen in your browser, or through a printer-friendly PDF.

What is in an Essay?

Essays will usually include an abstract, chapters forming the main body of the essay, a multimedia section, a chronology, a glossary and a recommended reading page. Links to these sections are available in the table of contents at the start of each essay.

You can also do the following from the essay:

  • Go to the author biography from the linked author name
  • Go to the next/previous section
  • Add the essay to your Marked List
  • Get the Durable URL for the essay
  • Print the essay
  • Email the essay
  • Download the citation for the essay
  • Save the essay in My Archive
  • Open the PDF for that essay

How can I view Multimedia items within an Essay?

You can view all the multimedia items relating to an essay by clicking the Multimedia link in the Table of Contents at the start of the Essay. This will take you to the section with all the multimedia resources for that essay listed: e.g. images and video clips.

Alternatively, Multimedia which is relevant to a particular essay section will be shown in a side panel, next to the relevant section. You can click on the title link to go to the Multimedia page.

Chronology

The Chronology is a list of timeline entries specific to that essay, with date, title and full description. For each item, you may:
  • View the item in context, ie within the timeline.
  • Click the view in timeline link to load the specific timeline page.
  • View the item reference in the essay. Clicking view in essay link that will take user to the first instance the timeline item is referenced in an essay.

Glossary

The Glossary terms and definitions are individual to each essay. You can access the full glossary page from the Table of Contents at the start of the essay or by clicking on a glossary term within the body of the essay text. The glossary section has:

  • A list of all glossary terms for that essay
  • Glossary items - each term and its definition
  • After each definition, there will be a link back to the first mention of the glossed word in each relevant essay section

Recommended Reading

The Recommended Reading page is a list of articles, book chapters and other documents relating to the essay. Recommended Reading is listed alphabetically by author name. Some items in the list have been designated as Required Reading resources by the essay authors and these are indicated with the icon. You can view a list of just the Required Reading items by clicking the Show Required Reading only link. If a resource is held within BSC you can click on the title link to view the resource. It is also possible to add each item on the Recommended Reading page to the Marked List using the checkbox below it.
