You are viewing content in a popup window. BSC will remain open in the original window. If you are a JAWS user, move between browser windows using Alt + Tab. Go Back one page using Alt + left arrow. Go Forward one page using Alt + right arrow. Refresh the page using Insert + Escape. Close this popup window using Alt + F4.
The Search Results page displays the results of your search. A summary of your search terms and the total number of results found is shown at the top of the page.
If you have used Quick Search, Search: All or Search: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience the results are grouped into sections by content type, e.g. Essays, Resources, Timeline, Multimedia, Journals, Newspapers, Black Literature Index . By default, BSC searches all content types. Use the links at the top of the page to jump to the relevant section.
A maximum of five (5) matches will appear in each section of the Search Results. If there are more than 5, you can click the the more... link. A dedicated Search Results page will appear, containing all results (or access to all results) for that category. A maximum of 1000 records will be returned for each category.
If you have searched for a single content type or used one of the individual searches a page showing the first 25 results is displayed.
Use the page number system displayed below the returned results to see more results beyond the first 25.
If the number of pages of results exceeds 10, click the Next link to view page 11 upwards, and so on. On subsequent pages, the Previous link will display the links for the previous pages.
The default maximum number of records displayed per page is 25. You may change the maximum number to 50; once changed this will persist throughout your session.
Note: if you selected a single type of content to search within, you will be taken to the dedicated Search Results page for that content type. If you searched on multiple categories, but only retrieved matches in a single category, the initial Search Results page will load.
From the Search Results page you can view the full text or full record of an item, or access other functions in BSC.
Each search result shows the title linked to the item, brief bibliographic information and links to the Full text and other formats where available. For content from Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience a brief line of context indicating hits is shown.
Click on a linked title to view an item. For video clips within the multimedia section, this will open a new page where you can choose between media formats.
The results are initially displayed in sections, by content type (Essays, Resources, Timeline, Multimedia, Journals, Newspapers and Black Literature Index).
Timeline, Journals, Newspapers and Black Literature Index results can be re-sorted if you access the dedicated Search Results page by clicking the more... link under the appropriate section.
Note: if you have performed a Quick Search and you click the Refine Search link you will be taken to the Search All page where your original search terms will be displayed.
To add all the items in your Search Results page to the Marked List check the Mark all items checkbox near the top of the page. The items will be displayed with a new background colour to indicate that they have been added to the Marked List.
To add individual items in your Search Results to the Marked List check the Add to Marked list checkbox below each item you wish to add. The items will be displayed with a new background colour to indicated that they have been added.
Items added to the Marked List will be kept there for the duration of your session. The number of items contained in the Marked List is shown next to the Marked List link in the panel to the right of the page.
You can save your search to My Archive to run again at a later date. To do this click the Save Search in My Archive link in the panel to the righthand side of the page. You will be asked to name your search and it will then be saved to My Archive.
Note: My Archive stores the search terms not the results so when you run the search from My Archive again it may not retrieve exactly the same results as your original search.
