Getting Started
Black Studies Center is a new resource that brings together invaluable current commentary, scholarly articles and historical primary documents. It builds a framework in which to research, study and teach the Black Experience. The core of this product includes four invaluable resources: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), The Chicago Defender, and the Black Literature Index. More content will be added in the future to build upon this core collection and help to expand the amount of material available electronically relating to the Black Experience.
All of the resources from Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience can be cross-searched with journals from the International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP) and newspaper articles from The Chicago Defender.
Most IIBP records in the current coverage contain an abstract, and additionally many IIBP records contain the corresponding full text of the original article. Coverage is international in scope and multidisciplinary, spanning cultural, economic, historical, religious, social, and political issues of vital importance to the Black Studies discipline. The journal list was prepared with the guidance of an advisory board including librarians specializing in Black Studies.
